Here at CoastWide Smiles, our dentists are experienced in performing Root Canal Treatments.
Root Canal Treatment is needed when a tooth has extensive decay, is cracked or broken, or as a result of an injury. The tooth will be irreversibly damaged, with the nerve in the tooth is injured, does not heal and leads to an abscess. This does not always cause pain and often goes undetected, until the bacteria formed in the abscess causes our bodies own defence to break down and then the tooth becomes extremely painful and to both hot and cold. It is often at this acute stage treatment is sought.
We believe in trying to save natural teeth for our lifetime and the treatment on how the root canal is done, will be fully discussed and then a treatment plan given at the time so that you may make an informed decision as what will suit you best. At this appointment the Dentist fully explains everything and the high success rate of this procedure.
If the Dentist, on examination, advises you in their opinion that the tooth cannot be saved, then the only course of treatment is to have the tooth extracted. Options of how the “space” left can be filled, will be explained to you in detail.
After Root canal treatment, the tooth is weaker and a crown is recommended to place over the top of the compromised tooth, to protect it and allow normal use without the risk of breaking the tooth that has been treated.
