Children's Dentistry

Ensuring healthy dental habits start early is one of the most important things that you can do for your child’s overall health. Let us help you get these routine dental habits started, to maintain healthy teeth and gums so your child retains their oral health for life.

Fissure Sealants

Fissure Sealants

Have you ever noticed that your teeth are not smooth on the top? They have little dips in them or grooves. These are known in the dental world as pits and fissures. It’s all very groovy really, your teeth that is. However, bacteria can sit in these pits and fissures and cause tooth decay. This is particularly so in children, as it can be quite tricky to brush these areas properly, deep into the grooves. That’s where fissure sealants can help, as they fill these pits and fissures, to smoothen out the shape of the tooth. This can greatly help with overall oral hygiene.

Pulpotomy

Pulpotomy

Pulpotomy

The pulp of the tooth, whilst not visible, is vital to maintaining a healthy tooth. In primary teeth, or children’s teeth, this pulp is larger than in permanent teeth and therefore, even a small amount of tooth decay may extend through to the pulp and cause discomfort. Tooth sensitivity is in most cases the first signs that a tooth may have caries (dental decay). A Pulpotomy may be the best treatment in this instance, as it removes a portion of the pulp which is infected, and a medicated dressing is then placed over the affected area. The desired result is that the rest of the tooth remains vital and remains healthy.

Stainless Steel Crowns

Stainless Steel Crowns

Stainless steel crowns are, in effect dental crowns for children, particularly baby molar teeth. These "caps" are an alternative to restorations or fillings and usually the preferred option for more severely damaged teeth. In general they will last for several years and will fall out naturally when the baby (primary) tooth falls out. Until that occurs, however, the stainless steel crown protects the tooth underneath, at the same time maintaining the space in the child’s mouth until the permanent tooth comes through. This will help prevent possible orthodontic issue further down the track and also help with general oral hygiene.

The Commonwealth Child Dental Benefits Schedule, or CDBS as it is known, is a payment made by the government for children to have access to dental treatments in Australia. This payment will cover some or all of the cost of preventive dental services, including regular dental check-ups, teeth cleans, restorations (fillings), x-rays, fissure sealants and more. This service is totally bulk billed. There are a few conditions that you will need to meet for your child to be eligible to receive this payment, so be sure to ask one of our friendly reception staff about this today.

Friendly, Experienced Children's Dentist

At CoastWide Smiles Dentalcare our very friendly, highly skilled and experienced dentists and oral health therapists understand children's dental care and will make your child's visit to us a fun and positive experience. We are know that prevention is always better than cure and so we actively encourage children to have a great oral health regime and help them achieve this in any way we can.

Good dental health routines should begin in infancy and continue throughout their adult life. Our dentists and hygienists are highly trained to look after children and young adults (0-18 years old) in a relaxed, fun environment and take the time and explain to them the importance of caring for their teeth, making your child smile with confidence.

CoastWide Smiles Dentalcare offers a full range of treatments for children and are very happy to answer any questions that you as a parent may have and explain in detail any procedure which may be required for your child.

At their first visit with us your child will receive a comprehensive examination and x rays, if these are needed, to assess your childs developing teeth and which will give us an overall picture to clearly assess all areas of the mouth. A thorough scale and clean will be given and flouride treatment may also be advised at that visit. Any treatment that is required will be fully explained and a plan given showing exactly what the cost will be and all of our children fees will have a discount applied to make this more affordable. After the initial visit with us, we recommend that all children attend our regular preventive dental care program to care for and maintain their teeth and oral health and as often as advised by our therapists, this is usually every six months. The Medicare Child Dental Benefits Scheme provides $1000 of free preventive dental to all eligible children, which is bulk billed, and our friendly team can check for you to see if your child is eligible for this.

We do offer an extensive range of paediatric dental services, with our therapists experienced in behaviour management techniques as well. Treatments available for children vary from comprehensive examinations, fissure sealants, restorations (white fillings), extraction of deciduous teeth, pulpotomy (nerve treatment), stainless-steel crowns (dental caps) on deciduous teeth and orthodontic advice is offered to all children.
