Veneers

Looking for that perfect, beautiful smile - then Dental Veneers are the answer

The popularity of Dental Veneers has grown exponentially in recent years, due to their ability to greatly improve the appearance of your teeth, giving you that Hollywood perfect smile. Considered the ultimate and easier smile makeover, there is nothing quite like beautiful and natural looking dental veneers to boost one’s self esteem and confidence.

Veneers are an easy way to address a variety of physical conditions which we would rather not have showing, such as gaps between our teeth, chipped teeth, crooked teeth, broken teeth, stained or discolored teeth, irregularly shaped or misaligned teeth.

What are dental veneers?

There are two types of veneers, 'Porcelain Veneers' and 'Composite Veneers'. Porcelain veneers look the best and last the longest and definitely are the treatment of choice.

Porcelain Veneers

A porcelain veneer is a thin layer of material (think of a false fingernail) which is bonded to the surface of the natural tooth to create an aesthetically beautiful smile. Porcelain veneers are made by very experienced dental technicians, here on the Sunshine Coast, specifically to each person's individual desired shape, length and color, to give an amazing natural appearance. CoastWide Smiles Dentalcare use only the very best ceramists to give superior results.

The application of porcelain veneers is quite simple. Our experienced dentists begin by removing around half a millimeter of enamel from the surface of the tooth, which is a similar thickness to the veneer itself. An impression of the teeth is then taken and sent to our laboratory for the precise construction of the custom veneer. At the second visit, the veneers are then cemented permanently on top of the natural tooth using a special bonding process once you are completely happy with the shape, color, transforming the appearance of your smile.

Composite Veneers

Composite resin veneers are done by the dentist in the chair in one appointment. The dentist will shape the composite resin material onto the tooth surface after preparing the tooth. The bond is then set hard onto the tooth to the natural tooth and with a dental curing light. This is a layering process, repeating the bonding process until the desired shape is achieved. The surface of the composite veneer is then smoothed over, creating the look of a natural tooth. CoastWide Smiles Dentalcare consider our dentist both practitioners and artists.

Who can get veneers?

Dental veneers don’t discriminate with almost anyone being a suitable candidate. They just require healthy teeth to bond to, so any gum disease or decay present must be treated before receiving veneers. It’s important to address what veneers do not do. As they are considered a cosmetic treatment they will not alter the bone structure of your teeth or jaw, so they will not correct overbites, underbites or greatly misaligned teeth. As persistent teeth grinding can cause damage to veneers if you suffer from bruxism, which is teeth grinding, veneers would not be suitable for you.

CoastWide Smiles dentists will check your suitability for veneers and discuss the best possible treatment options with you.

How long do they last?

Veneers last for many years and are also influenced by your oral hygiene and lifestyle. Preventive check-ups and cleans are recommended twice a year. To keep your veneers looking their best, it’s recommended that you avoid the risk of cracking or chipping by not biting down hard on the impact point of the veneer and don’t use your teeth as a third hand to open bottles and rip bags.

Composite or Porcelain?

With both options you are given a great smile and natural looking finish, although there are differences between the two materials that should be considered when deciding on your veneers. Porcelain veneers are a high quality material, giving a superior natural looking smile.

There is the difference in the application process of the two materials, porcelain veneers take 1-2 weeks to be made, whereas composite veneers are typically done in one dental appointment.

Porcelain veneers are the more durable and more resistant to staining of the two options, where they can last for many years. However if they were to crack or chip then veneer would have to be replaced.

Composite resin veneers are the more affordable option and last typically around 8 years. The maintenance can be considered a little easier as a chip or crack can be replaced in a single visit.
